Pros & Cons
Pros
Cons
- Do you frequently get called a “grammar nazi?”
- Are you looking for a new career path, specifically one from home?
- Have you ever thought about making an income from your proofreading skills?
Well, I’m very excited about this course, General Proofreading: Theory & Practice, which may just put that “annoying” habit into money-making use!
This is one of those rare skill sets that you can learn and make money in the convenience of your own home.
Quick Summary
Training: Learn how to proofread
Price: $497 – $597
Promotion: Ignite Plus and eight bonus resources
What is Proofreading?
Proofreading is scanning and correcting text for grammatical and semantic errors. Replacing commas with periods, correcting misspelled or misused words, that kind of thing.
This is not to be confused with editing, which often is a much longer process, requiring you to work with the author on the writing’s quality, formatting, etc.
Proofreading is simply fixing the technical stuff. Online proofreading means you can proofread from your own home.
What is General Proofreading: Theory & Practice?
It’s an online course that teaches you the necessary skills to build a freelance proofreading business at your own pace. The course is offered by Proofread Anywhere, a proofreading blog and educational website created by Caitlin Pyle.
Who is Caitlin Pyle?
Pyle’s the creator and instructor of General Proofreading.
She’s a professional proofreader and a well-known name in the proofreading business. She started out proofreading court reports before launching her own business.
She now works from all over the world and helps others attain the same lifestyle through her courses.
Goals much?
How Much Money Can You Really Make Proofreading?
Proofreading is not going to get you 100k a year, but it can make for a comfortable living. According to neuvoo, the average proofreader makes $48,125 per year.
You won’t make this much starting out, but you can work to it! My research shows that newbies usually pull in about $1000-$3000 a month.
Not bad at all when you get to do it in your PJs!
Who is this Course for - & Who it's Not
If you love reading and find yourself correcting your friends’ grammar all the time, then this course is for you. If you always notice typos and find it very difficult to read documents littered with errors, this course is for you.
If you hate reading, grammar, and could care less about the difference between there, their, and they’re, then this is not the course for you.
Save your money and consider another way of making an income online. Because you will not enjoy proofreading. Another important thing to consider is if running a business from home is for you.
This requires a lot of hard work and self-discipline. No one is going to make you get out of bed and start working. You need to be a self-starter.
You also need to be comfortable working alone for most or all of the day. If you like working with others and being “forced” to work, then you may want to stick to an office job.
Nothing wrong with that!

How Much Does it Cost?
The online proofreading course comes in two levels: Ignite and Ignite Plus.
At $497, Ignite gets you lifetime access to the course.
Ignite Plus, costing $597, includes a hand-graded exam, a certification of completion, a listing in the Self-Publishing School (SPS) preferred outsourcer rolodex, and membership in a separate marketing mastermind group specifically for PA General Proofreaders.
I recommend Ignite Plus. If you’re going to get wet, might as well go swimming!
There’s no official certification for proofreading services in the US, but being able to show you’ve completed a full training will help you gain clients.
There aren’t any big upsells in the course. You simply need a laptop and an internet connection to get started. You will start spending money when you launch a professional website, market yourself, etc., but that will be funded by your new income!
Unlike so many online courses out there, Pyle does not offer a refund. Here’s her words on the matter:
“I guarantee you’ll have all the support, resources, and tools you’ll need — but I cannot guarantee you’ll actually use them, nor can I make a guarantee to your future clients you can actually proofread well. Only you can do that! For these two reasons, I do not offer refunds on course enrollment fees.”
Fair enough! Just make sure you’re suitable for the job, and ready to commit.
Testimonials from Successful Students
Should You Buy General Proofreading: Theory & Practice?
Overall, I believe this is an excellent course that not only teaches you how to proofread, but how to make money doing it as part of your own proofreading business.
There are many courses out there that offer one or the other, but not both, so I believe this Proofread Anywhere course is a great investment for those interested in pursuing an at-home career.
If you decide to take things to the next level, you can move up to the Transcript Proofreading Course after this one. Although this course alone is enough for you to build you successful freelance proofreading business.
But as I said before, make sure you’re a self-starter who actually enjoys proofreading before investing in the course—especially since there’s no going back.
