The Bottom Line: The free text-based financial assistance and budgeting app Charlie monitors your bank and credit transactions to help you save money.

There used to be an app for everything, and now there are ten. And budgeting apps are no exception.
There are a ton of popular ones out there, including Mint, Pocketguard, YNAB...the list goes on
But the Charlie app is quite unique (and with that little penguin, quite cute). It doesn’t really require any work on the user's part, as it’s entirely text-based.
Think of it like having a friend who provides free 24/7 financial planning services, and they always text you back right away. No friend like that exists, right?
That’s why Charlie Finance Co. created an AI one. And it’s awesome.
Read on to see if Charlie may be right for you!
Service: A savings, budgeting, and monetary tracking app that helps you save money and pay off debt—all through text messages

What is Charlie?
Charlie is a free financial assistant app from Charlie Finance Co. that you connect to your bank accounts and credit card.
It then monitors all your transactions and proactively offers:
According to the website, Charlie is helping to pay down $50 million in credit card debt and helps its users save an average of $80 a week!
I say app, but it isn’t a robust tool like Mint. It’s entirely text-based, and therefore super easy to use.
How does it work?
You can pretty much ask Charlie for help with anything financial. Whether that be budgeting, making a savings plan, or just tracking expenses.
For example, you can tell Charlie how much you want to spend on wine a month. I know it’s hard to put a number on that, but bear with me.
Charlie will begin tracking and give you a heads up when you’re almost at your limit (no pun intended).
The cool thing is that Charlie is more than just a number cruncher, he’s an AI penguin who works better the more you use him.
As you respond to Charlie’s suggestions, he’ll get a better idea of the types of things you want to spend your money on—and what you don’t.
Besides what you want to be spending, Charlie can also see how much you’re making.
So if you’re being unrealistic about your budget, you can be sure he’ll point it out to you.
In a much more private (aka less embarrassing) way than sitting down with someone at your bank.
If you have a particularly specific comment or complaint, just text Charlie #feedback and write it out in detail.
If you only want alerts regarding certain things, you can modify your preferences so that it never feels like the app is spamming you.
And instead of uninstalling Charlie when you don’t need him anymore, just text “DELETE” and he won’t bother you again.
Right now, Charlie is only available in the United States, but there are rumors of a coming expansion.

Is it Legitimate & Safe?
Anything that can monitor your bank and credit activity undoubtedly raises some hesitation. But rest assured, Charlie is totally safe to use. It uses 256-SSL encryption (bank-grade) protection.
Charlie also never collects nor shares personal information, and doesn’t store or see your bank account credentials.
Charlie has a 4.5 star rating from over 600 reviews on Trustpilot. I’ve researched a lot of budgeting apps and this is a very impressive rating.
How Does The Company Make Money?
So it’s free and doesn’t sell any of my information.
How does that work?
How can people afford to create it?
Among the multitude of that cute penguin’s abilities is that he can suggest cheaper alternatives to your expenses.
Say you’re paying way too much for cable and Charlie suggests a cheaper provider.
If you switch, Charlie gets a little slice of commission. Win-win.
Pros & Cons
Should I use Charlie?
If you could use some help budgeting, paying off your credit card debt, or saving for that next vacation, absolutely!
There are no huge drawbacks, it’s very safe to use, and it can help you build a better relationship with your finances.
